About Us

The Work of the Federation

  • The trade association for the horological industry in the UK The principal work of the Federation is to approve individual companies as being satisfactory for membership, and to then help them trade around the world, in the UK and in the EU in particular. In turn this then automatically looks after the interests of the public as well. Trading is enhanced via:
    • Federation membership of the European committee for the horological industry (the European Union link)
    • Federation representation to UK Government for the horological industry (the Department of Trade & Industry link)
    • Federation membership of the World Watch Clock & Jewellery Show committee (the Basel, Switzerland, link)
    • Federation membership of the relevant UK standards committees (the British Standards Institution link)
    • Federation membership of International Standards committees (an extension of the BSI link)
  • Additionally the Federation, via its "Basel Fair" work, is the accredited trade organisation (ATO) approved by The "United Kingdom Trade and Investment" (UKTI) section of the DTI for UK Horological section of that show, and receives financial support, some of which goes directly to the Federation's exhibitors, i.e. for this principal horological fair of the World.
  • The Federation supports the educational work of the professional body, the British Horological Institute, and provides no less than three of the Institute's Annual examination prizes, for the promotion of professional excellence.
  • Every company in the industry gets the above benefits of the Federation's work, whether they are subscribing members or not. The more members there are however, the greater the influence the Federation can have on the various official bodies that directly affect the horological industry. Sometimes even adverse legislation is involved, which needs to be curbed by the Federation.
  • The Federation also promotes the industry in broad terms at every opportunity.
  • Specific sales assistance is given to individual member companies as appropriate, in answer to information sought by both the trade and the public about the source of specific supplies.
  • With regard to the make up of Federation membership it has, in addition to medium size and smaller firms, a number of the big International and National companies in its ranks, and always welcomes the support which it derives from its members.
